Getting Started in Batomon Showdown

Pick a trainer, spend the untimed shop, and leave day 5 with lives still on the bar.

Getting Started

Batomon Showdown looks like a creature RPG and plays like a shop auto-battler. You do not pick moves in combat. You buy, sell, merge, and position up to six Batomon, then press Battle and watch a saved board from the same numbered day. This page is the first-hour path: trainer select, the shop HUD, the merge recipe, and the three mistakes that end most new runs before day 6. Pair it with how to play when you want the exact life table, and with controls if you cannot find Fast Forward or the Batopedia.

The full game is scheduled for September 15, 2026 on Steam (Windows) with Android planned the same day. A public demo taught this loop for months; berrymint scheduled that demo to come down on September 14. The numbers below come from the current catalog (Balance 14 / Steam build 24914580): 88 Batomon, 17 trainers, 57 trinkets, 41 items. Launch adds more sets. The habits stay the same.

Step 1: read the three trainers

Every run starts with three trainer cards. The pick is locked for that run. You are not choosing a cosmetic. You are choosing an economy.

  • Youngster is the safest first lock for most players. The catalog lists three free rerolls every day, which turns a dead shop into a searchable one. Shop screenshots also show a large max-HP bonus on Youngster M; treat extra HP as a cushion, not a reason to ignore merges.
  • Bug Catcher makes the first Bug purchase each round free. That is a real gold refund if the shop keeps showing Bumblebolt, Formiqueen, Guardiant, or Brawlmantis.
  • Monster Ranger starts you with an Uncommon and copies it every two days. Strong if the free unit has a merge path; weak if you ignore it and buy a random Legendary.
  • Chef paints single-typed units Fire and gives Fire monsters +2 Burn. Take it only if you want a Burn plan, then read beginner trainers.
  • Egg Breeder gives a Purple Egg that hatches into a Super Rare after four days. You are playing a delayed payoff. Do not spend all gold trying to force the hatchling on day 2.
  • Masked Man lets you copy another trainer ability every four days. Flexible, but greedy if you still do not know what the shop is asking.
  • Gamer grants a Mythical on day 9. That is a late spike, not a beginner cushion. See mythical builds after you can reach day 9 with lives left.

If the three offers are all greedy (Mad Scientist, Gamer, Masked Man), pick the one whose payoff arrives before your lives collapse. Mad Scientist transforms the active team into random level-1 Legendaries on day 7. That is a reset, not a reward, unless you kept gold and board space for the new units.

Step 2: learn the shop before you learn the roster

The shop is five slots. Typical layout: four Batomon and one Item while you still have an item use; otherwise the fifth slot is another Batomon. Gold sits in the center. Reroll is 3 gold unless a free reroll is queued. Lock holds the current offers for tomorrow; if you reroll after locking, the new offers still carry. Rank odds rise with the day and can be pushed by trainers, trinkets, and items. Rank is a probability, not a promise.

Your team is six slots plus a bench. Lives, day number, and win count sit on the top bar. Ten lives is the start. Ten trophy icons is the finish. Pressing Battle locks buying and positioning, then searches for a same-day saved board. Nobody is waiting on the other end, so there is no excuse to send a confused lineup. Full gold math lives on shop and merging and the economy tool.

Step 3: merge on a recipe, not on vibes

Three matching level-1 copies make level 2. Two matching level-2 copies make level 3. A merge also opens a trinket gift. Special effects, not normal combining, can reach level 4. If any ingredient is shiny, the result is shiny. Shiny is not a flat stat multiplier; some shinies rewrite the ability. Check the Batopedia entry before you spend a Shiny Berry just because it glows.

A practical early recipe: buy two copies of a cheap Common that your trainer actually buffs, hold them, and only then roll for the third. Selling too early to chase a Legendary is how boards stall at five scattered level-1s. Trinkets from merges are often the real power spike, especially duplicators, haste bells, and economy pieces like Piggy Bank or Gold Nugget.

The video in the middle of this page is a full beginner championship attempt. Watch the shop pauses more than the damage numbers. Notice how long the player spends hovering abilities before Battle. That pause is the skill.

Step 4: respect day 5 and Second Chance

Losses cost 1 life on days 1–2, 2 lives on days 3–4, and 3 lives from day 5 onward. The first time you hit zero lives, Second Chance returns you to 1 life and opens a reward event. The next depletion ends the run. There is no hidden five-loss counter. A messy day-6 fight can cost 3 lives even if you only dropped two fights all run.

Treat early losses as tuition if they buy a merge. Do not treat late losses as tuition. The 10-win guide covers when to freeze a shop for a missing copy versus when to pivot into a meta comp. Formiqueen cores want Commons nearby. Berroon cores want item volume. Plunderbird cores want Water adjacency and casts.

Step 5: open Batopedia, then stop collecting trivia

The Batopedia tracks championship stickers: a trophy for any win with that Batomon, a medal for a level-3 (or higher) win, and a star for a shiny win. Hovering a unit highlights allies that share its trigger. Use that highlight. If Draconarch cares about Start of Battle neighbors, those neighbors should actually sit next to it. Positioning rules are in the combat guide.

After one completed run, ranked unlocks. Stars move by wins minus 5. Details live on the ranks page. You do not need ranked on day one. You need one Casual 10-win so the game starts showing you real player boards instead of only the tutorial curve.

When you are ready to specialize, jump to the trainer guide, the Batomon tier list, or the team planner. Keep this page as the checklist you reread when a run dies to panic rerolls.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What should I click first in a new Batomon Showdown run?

Read all three trainer cards, then lock a simple economy such as Youngster or Bug Catcher. Open beginner trainers if the offers look greedy.

How do I level a Batomon?

Three matching level-1 copies make level 2. Two matching level-2 copies make level 3 and grant a trinket gift. See shop and merging.

When does the run actually end?

At 10 wins, or when lives hit zero after you have already used Second Chance. Exact costs are on how to play.

Is the demo required after September 15, 2026?

No. The demo was a teaching build. Launch adds more sets. The shop-battle-10-wins loop described here is the one the Steam page still advertises.
